Trend - A World of Blue: A Relaxed Sophistication

(Edward St, Brisbane March 2012)

With the popularity of period dramas such as Downton Abbey, Mad Men and the anticipated film The Great Gatsby a return to old school dress with a modern twist has increased in popularity.

According to CSIRO a megatrend for the future is this notion of “a personal touch” (CSIRO 2012). This means there will be an increase need for innovation that is tailored and targets specific services (2012). This affects the fashion industry and trends will turn towards bespoke tailoring and personal service.

Future business trends have consumers in the mind set of “flawsome” (Trendwatching 2012). There is a trend for “human brands” – for companies to show flaws and be honest with their weaknesses (2012). It is predicted that consumers “will become increasingly disenchanted when dealing with traditional, boring, impersonal brands” (Trendwatching 2012). This idea that businesses should be flawed rather than perfect influences fashion – instead of overly pristine lines, a more dishevelled and relaxed look is created (Fashionishing 2012).

There will be an increase use of the already popular social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook (Quora 2012). We could in some underlying way link this to the obsession with the colour blue – Twitter and Facebook’s colour template. Or we could just say it’s a nod to past decades where a blue suit was your average attire or we could link shades of blue to relaxation and the Mediterranean (Swide 2012). Either way – it’s back in a big way.

Spotted walking Edward Street this gentleman’s outfit is right on future trend – the pale blue palette reminiscent of the “ice cream pastels” shown in the 2012/13 collections (WeConnectFashion 2012). We also saw blue suits of all shades at Paris fashion week with the likes of Michael Bastian and Tom Ford showcasing some sartorial examples (GQ 2012). This is therefore a trend that has trickled-down onto the streets (Polhemus 1994). The checked suit jacket is a relaxed tailored fit – we saw checks on the Gucci Spring 2012 Runway (GQ 2012). The subtle stripped shirt gives it texture and dimension, brown leather shoes reminiscent of an earlier period.

Look out for blues of all shades and relaxed tailoring – be the man who looks like he cares but make it look effortless.

Trend -The Textural Jungle

(Queens St Mall, Brisbane 2012)

With the increase use of touch technology and online worlds there will be an increased desire to be able to touch physical textures (WeConnectFashion 2012). We are evolving into this idea of feel and touch; a notion of “living design” (WGSN 2012). This consumer and technological trend is influencing fashion culture through the materials we wear and how we wear it.

Hypercraft is being used to describe the way modern artisans are using technology to add an extra dimension to traditional crafts. This new technology is taking handcrafted designs to new levels (TDWI 2012). There is an emergence for intelligent textiles and creative design (BERG 2012).

For example, Alexander McQueen's 2012/13 collection of alien like proportions and textural elements explored modern design and technology (Vogue 2012). Furthermore, Layers of white lace as featured in Comme des Garcons Spring 2012 collection saw texture and fine detailing (Style.com 2012).

According to Vogue’s top 50 picks of the coming season there is an emergence of “crafty craftsmanship” (2012). Similarly this correlates to an emerging look of “the new naive” – the girl who throws away the rule book like a playful child (Franklin and Wedst 2012, 112).

Boundaries are slipping away – with increase communication through fashion blogs, runway live streaming and online shopping consumers are getting styles and trends fast (Business of Fashion 2012). This web of communication results in consumers having the ability to own the latest thing almost instantaneously, resulting in an increase desire to make a look individual.

This girl had elements of textural mash-up combining a lace shirt with a woollen vest and a statement metallic necklace, cotton skirt and quirky mauve coloured shoes. Furthermore, the shades of purple in the outfit suggest a nod to the monochromatic trend (WhoWhatWear 2012). Her colour palette has an artistic flair and its’ plum shades are a spring/summer 2013 must (Fashion Trendsetter 2012).

Be brave, give textural clash a go – fashion has no rules.

Trend - Thrift Vintage

(Queens St Mall, Brisbane 2012)
(Queens St Mall, Brisbane 2012)

We live in a time of instant reward, we live in a time of exponential progression and yet we have this endless fascination with days of old (Business of Fashion 2012).

With students struggling to get by with next to no money they are finding new ways to be thrifty yet stylish (News.com.au 2012). Furthermore according to WGSN “the financial crisis of 2008 created a generation of twenty-somethings whose projected life-arch had switched quite suddenly from an upward curve to a downward curve” (2012).

If anything, we are a generation of resourcefulness. Empty pockets means young people are flocking to op shops and up cycling pre loved outfits. Furthermore, there are macro trends of citizen journalism, increased communication and collaboration platforms, this move into a “world of relationship” (Kino 2012). This idea of togetherness can often mean change for fashion – to be rebellious and individual instead.

There is an increasing trend of woman choosing more independent lifestyles - this move away from married life means creating a sense of strength and independence (WeConnectFashion 2012). The modern woman is constantly on the move so flats are the new stiletto. Woman will want comfort, shoes they can run in.

This girl’s outfit screams vintage chic. She’s the retro indie girl who is not afraid to show her true colours. The vintage bag bought at an op shop, the mid length navy blue skirt matched with that classic combination of bright reds and that perfect Dita Von Teese-esque makeup to polish the look. Her colours are a nod to Kate Spade’s New York 2012 collection (WGSN 2012). She isn’t shy to mix eras – the skirt and makeup say vintage yet the stockings and black lace shoes say modern. She embodies a gamine 60s gal with hints of 1940s vixen.
